Skype & Verizon App for the iPhone

Skype & Verizon VoIP iPhone Application

Rumors have been rife, but finally an announcement has been made which confirms that Skype and Verizon are to release a new custom made application for the iPhone allowing Skype VoIP mobile calls to be made using the ever popular Smartphone.

The VoIP calling application will be free and will be available for Smartphone users with an existing voice and data plan. Verizon’s new and existing customers will benefit from being able to connect with over 500 Million Skype users globally.

Reports confirm that the new VoIP app will be available on nine of Verizon’s mobile devices including the BlackBerry Storm, the Curve, Tour complete with Google’s Android platform mobiles including the Motorola Devour, Motorola Droid and the Droid Eris.

Skype Launching HD Compatible VoIP Video & Calling Service

Skype, the now well known VoIP calling provider has just launched their latest version of Skype for Windows, with a client that will allow users to make 720p HD-quality video calls at the full 1280 x 720 pixel rate.

Skype Beta 4.0 for Windows has been promised to provide and ‘give individuals an even smoother and richer video calling experience’ by delivering an awesome 720p HD quality at a full 30 frames per second while making the VoIP call.

Callers wishing to use the VoIP service will require a new HD webcam, a PC with a minimum of 1.8 GHz dual-core processor and a high-speed broadband connection to ensure there is adequate processing speed and bandwidth available for the the HD video conference style set up.

Mobile & Wireless VoIP App Soon to be Released on the iPhone

A company called Matrix Knowledge Management Pty have recently announced the launch of a new iPhone app that is promised to be ‘open and configurable’ allowing users to make VoIP telephone calls and send SMS text messages over the VoIP network.

The proposed “V Phone application” offers an important edge over competitors as rather than committing iPhone users into working with just one VoIP provider, it will instead let users choose between many different VoIP providers. In addition to this key feature, the V Phone app is also the first open and easily configurable application to also offer SMS text messaging over VoIP.

VoIP market now worth $20.7 billion

A report from Infonetics Research for VoIP, UC Services and Subscribers showed that in the first half of 2009 the global VoIP services market grew to $20.7 billion.

The report detailed information on the majority of the VOIP growth being from residential VOIP subscribers, which was up by 14% from the end of 2008. Business figures, however, showed a slowdown on IP PBX growth but a forecast for an increase of 26% in revenue with Hosted VoIP & UC services.

The Directing Analyst of service provider VoIP and IMS at Infonetics Research, Diane Myers, was quoted as saying “Demand for residential and business VoIP services continues to grow even as spending in other communication areas tightens.”

BARCELONA, February 17, 2009 — Skype and Nokia today announced a partnership that will bring the world’s leading Internet communications experience to the Nokia range of mobile computers. Under the terms of the cooperation, Skype™ will be integrated into Nokia devices, starting with the Nokia Nseries. The Nokia N97 flagship device will be the first to incorporate the Skype experience in the 3rd quarter of 2009.
